From Heart to Hand

BY STEPHANIE CAJUCOM

Passed the emerald waves of the Gulf of Mexico lies a tale of two girls with one vision. It’s in the heart of Yucatan that Mexican designers Georgina and Joana manifested Amandina as a tribute to their past and a telling of their future. With artisanal filigree and precious stones they paint a lasting picture of the city that inspires with a shared modern vision.

We’re inspired by everything around us.

“Amandina’s mission is to revive Mestizo traditions from a contemporary point of view.” Through the Yucatan technique of filigree, they weave wires to fulfill cultural heritage with a new added shine. By using the almost forgotten craft they preserve the tradition that inspired them in the first place. “Where we’re from, indigenous women still wear the beautiful huipil on a regular basis.” The accessories that they wore sparked the creation but didn’t stop the inspirations.

“We’re inspired by everything around us.”  Experiences to travels to people, nature, and the feelings they have and yearn for create a constant whirlwind of stylish stimulation. Although from to wildly different backgrounds, their muses often overlap and intertwine, creating a unified mood board. From there, the ideas go from heart and head to hand, as they skillfully craft the pieces with the special technique that only a true South Mexican can execute.

With precision and pride they turn cool metals into feminine adornments, wearable on the chic city streets of NYC or the sunny beaches of Mexico City. The designers tailor their collections to their own personal styles. “ Daily, we’ll wear layered necklaces, rings and earrings. The point for us is to always keep it subtle and elegant, so we design accordingly.”

The talented designers range of inspiration is evident in their work. The Frida’s Heart, one of their most prideful pieces, is an homage to Mexican mastermind, Frida Kahlo’s, iconic painting. The Bridal Pieces are fueled by the pure emotion felt by a bride on her most special day. And the 3 Pyramid Earrings are a modern architectural accessory meant to make a powerful statement.

The tale of Amandina is already thriving with honorary awards like the Sterling Silver Bienale and Mexican Sterling Silver Honorific Mention. Making their heritage proud with their modern interpretations, they plan on incorporating more precious and semi-precious stones into the next chapter of their story and we can’t wait to jump right in.
