Keytt Lundqvist

Brazilian-Japanese beauty Keytt Lundqvist is often seen as a red carpet fashionista, but far beyond a sense of style and beneath the socialite façade, Lundqvist is a woman secure in who she is. Growing up within two seemingly distinct cultural worlds in which the male figure prevails, she knew early on that she wanted to become a strong, determined, and independent woman.

Lundqvist arrived in New York City from Brazil in 1992 to study. Eight years later she first met top model Alex Lundqvist, at a SoHo party. Eventually, they married, but because her husband’s high profile career keeps the couple separated for extended periods, they have had to consciously work to nurture and sustain their partnership—a job Keytt takes very seriously.

Despite society’s stubborn portrait of her as Alex Lundqvist’s wife or “plus one,” she proudly supports her husband’s career but without sacrificing her own individuality. She has no regrets about being a stay-at-home mom either. In fact, she has little patience for those who cast such a choice in a negative light. Simply, her children are her passion.

But no matter what role Keytt inhabits she is the epitome of the modern woman— beautiful and bold, tender and fierce, and absolutely unafraid of defining life on her own terms.

P7: WHEN WE FIRST MET, YOU TOLD ME HOW YOUR PARENTS MET, COULD YOU SHARE THAT WITH US?

KL: MY DAD WAS IN BRAZIL ON BUSINESS FROM JAPAN AND HE MET MY MOM AT A DELI WHERE SHE WAS THE CASHIER. HE FELL IN LOVE AND WENT BACK THERE EVERYDAY UNTIL SHE AGREED TO GO OUT ON A DATE WITH HIM. THEY WERE MARRIED 6 MONTHS LATER.

P7: TELL US ABOUT THE BEST MEMORY FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD THERE.

KL: PLAYING OUTDOORS, REALLY BEING WITH FRIENDS. GROUP ACTIVITIES THAT DIDN’T INVOLVE ELECTRONICS OR SOCIAL MEDIA. I WISH MY OWN CHILDREN COULD EXPERIENCE SUCH INNOCENCE.

P7: WHEN DID YOU MEET YOUR HUSBAND AND WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?

KL: I MET ALEX FOR THE FIRST TIME AT A PARTY IN SOHO, NY IN 2000. WE SPOKE FOR A SHORT WHILE, DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS THERE WITH MY BOYFRIEND AT THE TIME. AND WE SAW EACH OTHER AGAIN ALMOST A YEAR LATER—A WEEK AFTER 9/11.LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT? NOT SURE. BUT HE DEFINITELY MADE A KILLER FIRST IMPRESSION. I REMEMBER THE MOMENT WHEN HE WALKED INTO THE ROOM. FOR ME, TIME STOPPED AND EVERYBODY DISAPPEARED.

P7: HOW HAS YOUR HUSBAND’S JOB AFFECTED YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

KL: THE BAD MADE US STRONGER. THE BAD BEING THE TIME AWAY FROM EACH OTHER.  IT HELPED US AVOID ROUTINE. WE CONSTANTLY MISS ONE ANOTHER AND THAT KEEPS OUR FEELINGS FRESH.

P7: YOUr FATHER AND MOTHER WERE FROM TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS, HOW HAS THAT EFFECTED YOUR UPBRINGING?

KL: TWO VERY DIFFERENT CULTURES WITH ONE THING IN COMMON. THE MALE FIGURE PREVAILS. IN BRAZIL, WHERE I GREW UP, MEN ALSO DOMINATE. DESPITE ALL THIS, I KNEW FROM A VERY YOUNG AGE THAT I WANTED TO BE A WOMAN WITH A VOICE AND A WILL.

P7: ARE YOU CLOSE TO YOUR FAMILY TODAY?

KL: VERY CLOSE. FAMILY IS HUGE FOR ME. MY OLDER AND ONLY BROTHER PASSED AWAY YEARS AGO. AND SO NOW IT’S MY TWO SISTERS AND ME.

P7: Knowing that he was one of the most famous male models in the world, were you ever nervous that it would not work out?

KL: The Alex I was dating wasn’t the supermodel. He was a sweet, kind, and down to earth guy. Anyway, confidence isn’t something I lack. I never saw myself as less than him despite his incredible success.

P7: What was the hardest part of being with Alex, during his peak in his modeling career?

KL: Being apart for long periods of time.

P7: How did you cope with those periods when he was away, working abroad?

KL: I have a life of my own. Alex is a big part of my life, but not all of it. I’m the one holding our house together, allowing him to do what he does peacefully.

P7: How did you manage not to be jealous of all the women your husband worked with? Or were you ever jealous?

KL: Our relationship is based on trust. If you don’t have trust you have nothing. Jealousy is a waste of valuable energy.

P7: Did you ever become tired of being Alex Lundqvist’s wife?

KL: I’m his wife and that’s a fact. Am I only that? Absolutely not. And the people that know me know that. Whether society sees me as Alex’s Lundqvist’s wife or his plus one, I’m happy and proud to support my husband.

P7: How do you keep your relationship burning, after more then a decade?

KL: Respecting each other’s individuality. Date nights and sexy lingerie help too.

P7: You are a mother of two, share with us what you have learned from motherhood?

KL:  Motherhood made me carefully scrutinize my choices. It made me think long and hard about my values. Motherhood humbled me. It made me a better person. It taught me unconditional love and gave me the sense of belonging to something great and real. My kids are my passion. They move me profoundly. When my son read a poem he wrote for me on Valentine’s Day, I cried. Losing them is my greatest fear.

P7: Do you regret any of your decisions, like not working?

KL: I try to live my life without regrets.  And any decision that benefits my children is a good decision.

P7: If you can redo one thing in your life what would it be?

KL: Everything I did led me to where I am. Anything bad only made me stronger.  So…no redos.

P7: Do you believe it faith or destiny?

KL: I believe everything happens for a reason.

P7: Is there anything you would like to share with the world, but never gotten asked?

KL: Be you. Love you. No one can do it for you.
